VALPARAISO,Ind.-- Sophomore Kristen Goncalves(Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard Catholic) of the University of Michigan women's soccer team scored on a breakaway in the 89th minute to propel the Maize and Blue to a 2-1 comeback victory at Valparaiso on Sunday (Aug. 23) on Eastgate Field.
Junior/sophomore Kristen Keane(Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) was up to the task in net, making three saves. Junior Amanda Bowery(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) tallied an assist and had a pass in the box deflected in by a Crusader defender.
With regulation winding down, Michigan capitalized on a defensive mistake to go ahead 2-1 with 1:16 remaining. Bowery took possession at the top of the U-M box on a defensive stand and blasted the ball toward the attacking third. A Valparaiso defender put a touch on the ball, but it went right to the feet of a streaking Goncalves with nothing but the goalie to beat. With the Valpo goalkeeper charging, Goncalves sent a low shot into the right side of the net.
Valparaiso scored quickly, going up 1-0 in the seventh minute, and held its lead until the middle of the opening frame. Michigan caught a break in the 22nd minute when Bowery sent a well-placed free kick into the middle of the box that was redirected by a defender's head and into the top of the goal.
Michigan's road swing continues next weekend in Milwaukee, Wis., for the Milwaukee Cup. Tournament host Wisconsin-Milwaukee will be on the docket for a 7 p.m. CDT start on Friday (Aug. 28).

Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the victory... "It was a must win. This team needs to learn how to win. I was really proud of them today, they went down early and kept battling. They got a break to get back to 1-1 and kept taking over the game more and more. We were fortunate to score on a great goal with a minute left in the game -- you can't score at a better time. The girls are progressing in the way they are playing and this will give them confidence that we are moving in the right direction."
On the execution... "We played a lot smarter, tonight. Our defending was really good. All of the backs did a great job. It took a miraculous goal in the first half for them to get on the board. We moved together as a unit, created more chances; it was much better today than it was against Arkansas. We just have to keep working at it."
U-M Sophomore Forward Kristen Goncalves
On her game-winning goal... "The defender took a bad touch on the ball. We have been focusing on playing with grit, so I pressured it and it worked out. I had a lot of chances to practice breakaways during the preseason, so I wasn't nervous. The goalie came out and I just took the shot.
On the victory... "I think it is going to be great for this team. We know we have the capability to be a winning team and do better than we have in the recent past. This is a good time to start turning things around and start winning more games."
U-M Junior Defender Amanda Bowery
On the shot that became the first U-M goal... "It was 30 yards out and based on how the defense was set up I decided to chip it in. I figured that would give us the best chance to score. I just chipped it in there and the girl hit it in."
On the game-winning goal... "I was mostly trying to get it out of our end. Greg (Ryan) has been telling us that you want to make their defense drop if nothing else. I just tried to get it over the top and out and the (Valparaiso) girl missed it and it went to Kristen (Goncalves). It was an exciting finish."
