POZAN, Poland -- Former University of Michigan rowers Sarah Trowbridge (2003-05) and Stesha Carle (2003-06) earned silver medals in the quadruple scull at the 2009 World Championships, held Aug. 23-31, in Pozan, Poland. Former Wolverine Ellen Tomek (2004-06) also competed, finishing sixth in the final of the women's double scull.
Trowbridge (2003-05) and Carle (2003-06) made up half of the U.S. senior four that earned a silver medal. It is the second medal for both Trowbridge and Carle, who took runner-up honors in the four at the 2008 World Championships. The crew of Trowbridge, Carle, Kate Bertko and Megan Walsh claimed runner-up honors by crossing the finish line in 6:21.54. The U.S. crew crossed the 500-meter mark in fourth place and continued to walk through Russia and Germany by the halfway point. At the 1,250-meter mark, Ukraine led with three-quarters of a length on the U.S. and increased that distance in the sprint to win gold in a 6:18.41. Germany took bronze, finishing with a time of 6:24.27. The U.S. quartet advanced directly to the final by winning its heat.
Tomek (2004-06), racing in the double sculls with Megan Kalmoe, took a sixth-place finish in the final. The U.S. duo finished second to Poland's Magdelena Fularczyk and Julia Michalska in the semifinal on Thursday and crossed the finish line with a time of 6:54.16. Coming off of a gold-medal performance in Lucerne and a fifth-place finish at the 2008 Olympic Games, the U.S. duo was first off the line and led the pack at the 500-meter mark before slipping back over the second half of the course. Fularczyk and Michalska won gold in a 6:47.18.
U-M assistant coach Brett Sickler also participated in the World Championships as an alternate to the gold-medal winning women's eight.
