FULLERTON, Calif. -- In a physical contest that featured two red cards, two penalty kicks and 21 fouls, the University of Michigan women's soccer team fell, 2-0, at Cal State Fullerton on Friday afternoon (Sept. 11) at Titan Stadium. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Keane (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) stopped two shots in the cage for the Wolverines.
Despite the 2-0 final, the Wolverines did generate opportunities that ended with the ball in the back of the net. Midway through the first half, sophomore Kelsey Rogind (Emerald Hills, Calif./St. Francis) played a rebound in the goal mouth and put it into the upper corner but was ruled offside, nullifying the goal. In the second half, junior Sarah Stanczyk (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) created several chances for the Maize and Blue, with her best coming off a header in the box that dented the twine. It was ruled not a goal because she made contact with the Titan goalkeeper.
The Titans converted a penalty kick near the end of the first half in the 31st minute to end the stalemate and padded their lead shortly into second half in the 59th minute to go up by two goals. The Wolverines had a chance on a penalty kick 1:40 into the game but did not convert.
U-M seeks to return to its winning ways on Sunday (Sept. 13) at Southern Cal. The game is set to kick off at noon PDT in Los Angeles, Calif.

Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the game ... "If you look at the stats, obviously it was a very even game. It came down to goalkeeping and their goalkeeper had very good day. She made important saves, including on our penalty kick. I think that's where the game was won. It was an odd game because we missed a PK and they made one to put us a goal down, and then we lost (Amanda) Bowery, who is our top striker. It was just us trying to patch something together to create chances. We still created them, but their goalie made key saves."
