COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Behind four individual wins and one relay victory, the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team defeated a trio of Big Ten opponents on Saturday (Jan. 30) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. U-M defeated No. 9 Ohio State (197.5-135.5), Northwestern (261-67) and Penn State (260-72) in its second Big Ten action of the season.
Balance was once again the key for the Wolverines as four different swimmers won individual events. The Maize and Blue also went 1-2 in two separate events, the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.
The Wolverines took the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle, led by senior Charlie Houchin's (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe), first-place time of 4:23.50. Senior captain André Schultz (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares) took second in 4:25.36 and freshman Hassaan Abdel Khalik (Mississauga, Ontario/Silverthorn Collegiate) rounding out the Wolverine top three with a time of 4:28.72.
In the 200-yard butterfly, senior captain Chris Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) won in 47.16 with sophomore Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) right behind him for runner-up honors (47.70).
Junior Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) won the 200-yard individual medley (1:48.06) to go along with a second-place showing in the 100-yard backstroke (49.02). Junior Neal Kennedy (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) provided the Wolverines with their final individual win of the afternoon, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (55.54).
Sophomore diver Chris Morrison (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) took third on the three-meter springboard, racking up 283.60 points.
U-M concluded the meet with a relay victory, with the quartet of Brady, Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), Kennedy and Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. Francis deSales) winning the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:20.65).
U-M returns to Canham Natatorium for its final dual meet of the season, hosting Michigan State on Saturday (Feb. 6) at noon. Following the meet, the Wolverines will be available for a meet-and-greet session.

Head coach Mike Bottom is a perfect 10-0 in Big Ten action in his two years at Michigan.
Over the two-day meet, Chris Brady, Tyler Clary and Dan Madwed all won multiple individual events.
The 200-yard freestyle team established a new season-best time, beating the previous time by .01 seconds.
Freshman Sam Hoekstra competed in both the one- and three-meter dives for the first time in his collegiate career.
Michigan won two of the four relays over the two-day meet.
The Wolverines defeated all three teams at last year's quad meet, also in Columbus, Ohio.
This is the first of five remaining meets on the schedule at Ohio State. U-M will return to Columbus for the OSU Winter Invitational (Feb. 13-14), the Big Ten Championships (Feb. 24-27), Ohio State Last Ditch (Feb. 28) and NCAA Championships (March 25-27).
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Mike Bottom
On the performance of the team ... "We dug down; the guys stepped up. They didn't allow some losses to deflate them and I think we could move forward. I think we had great leadership with Chris Brady. He won everything he swam in, except the relays but he swam really fast in those. Andre has been great for us all season. Those are our two main senior guys, and they really led the way. Tyler made some corrections over the past couple of weeks since SMU and did a great job. Charlie Houchin really stepped it up this week and it was fun to watch him actually race and execute strategies. Neal Kennedy was stellar in everything he did this weekend, so that was fun to watch."
On Dan Madwed, who won three events ... "Dan Madwed, you look at his swims the past two days. He swam great last night in the 200 freestyle and 200 fly and in the relays. He did the same today with the 100 fly and 100 free. He was showing some leadership out there and moving the team forward. He has been helping everyone understand that we need to have good depth.
On the depth of the team ... "James Ridgeway swam the 200 IM even though he was not supposed to today. After we lost that first relay, we had to make some lineup changes so our last relay would be a good one. We made some shifts and put him in that race. He swam a great swim and scored for us. There were some inspirational swims all over the place for us today."
