ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team recorded a 6-1 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 9) at Yost Ice Arena. Paired with last night's 4-3 win at WMU, U-M secured its first CCHA series sweep since late October 2009. Michigan led 3-1 after two periods before locking up the win with three third-period goals.
The line of junior left wing Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden), junior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and freshman right wing Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) combined for three goals and six assists. Hagelin recorded a career-high four points, assisting on U-M's first two goals and scoring the fourth and fifth goals. Lynch had a career-best three assists and Rust tallied a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) got the win with 25 saves, 12 of which came in the third period.
Junior defenseman Chad Langlais (Spokane, Wash.) kicked the scoring off early with a tally merely 26 seconds into the opening frame, marking the fastest goal for U-M this season. After a scramble in front of the Bronco net, Hagelin slid the puck to the high left slot for Langlias, who hammered home a top-shelf slap shot.
Minutes later at 3:44, Hagelin found his way from the right-hand corner to the back of the Bronco net, and backhanded a pass to Rust. Hanging just outside the crease, Rust squeaked the puck across the line to double the Wolverine lead.
Western Michigan found an answer of its own from Travis Paeth. Streaking down the left boards on a three-on-one break, Derek Roehl found Paeth staring at a wide-open net to cut the U-M lead in half.
Freshman center A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) bolstered the Michigan lead midway through the second stanza during a U-M power play. From the right point, right wing Ben Winnett (New Westminster, B.C.) flicked the puck on net, allowing senior left wing Brian Lebler (Penticton, B.C.) to deflect it across to Treais for the easy empty-net finish.
U-M fought off back-to-back penalties in the middle of the second frame, including a five-minute major infraction called on freshman defenseman Lee Moffie (Wallingford, Conn.) for hitting from behind. Two minutes later, a minor penalty on U-M put WMU on a five-on-three power play. Yet with 5:44 remaining in the period, Hagelin and sophomore center Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) rifled off a series of shots to test WMU goaltender Riley Gill. A WMU penalty in the final stages of the two-man disadvantage helped the Wolverines maintain their 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
U-M rattled off three more goals in the third to saddle the Broncos for good. Hagelin notched two goals, both on feeds from Lynch. Hagelin once again found his way behind the Bronco net, yet rather than dishing it off, he instead wrapped around the net and niftily flicked the puck over the netminder's left shoulder at 9:51. Just over three minutes following, Hagelin beat Gill between the legs on a Lynch pass from behind the net.
Sophomore left wing David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) then wrapped up the scoring at 15:58 on assists from junior left wing Scooter Vaughan (Placentia, Calif.) and Winnett.
Next week (Fri-Sat., Jan. 15-16), the Wolverines will look to extend their three-game winning streak against the No. 20-ranked Alaska Nanooks. Both games will be played at Yost Ice Arena and begin at 7:35 p.m.
