ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With official practices starting in a few days and the start of the season only weeks away, the University of Michigan men's basketball team held its annual media day on Wednesday (Oct. 13) at Crisler Arena.
Before the media had an opportunity to speak to the players on this season's roster and head coach John Beilein, select members of the media were put through a 45-minute workout with the team's head strength and conditioning coach, Jon Sanderson. With the entire coaching staff on hand to watch, the workout consisted of battle ropes (swinging large ropes in an up-and-down controlled manner), medicine balls and the ladder drill.
The player interviews began at 4:30 p.m. in the Junge Champions Center. While returning starters Zack Novak, Stu Douglass and Darius Morris received the bulk of the attention, the Wolverines' four-member freshman class -- Evan Smotrycz, Tim Hardaway, Jr., Colton Christian and Jon Horford -- got their first taste of the media spotlight, as they were interviewed by a group of reporters.
After about a half-hour of speaking with the media, the players headed down to the Crisler Arena floor for a 20-minute photo op with the photographers on hand, while Beilein hit the podium for his beginning of his press conference inside the Junge Center.
The Wolverines officially begin practice on Friday, which marks three weeks until the first game -- an exhibition tilt against Saginaw Valley State on Friday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. inside Crisler Arena. The game will be shown on BigTenNetwork.com.
