ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to record its first win of the Big Ten season, edging Purdue, 2-1, on Thursday night (Oct. 14) inside the U-M Soccer Stadium.

Clare Stachel
Freshman Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) scored 59 seconds into the second half and junior/sophomore Clare Stachel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) tallied the game-winner in the 83rd minute for the Wolverines. Junior/sophomore Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made five saves for the victory.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Michigan got the equalizer less than a minute into the second frame, when freshman Meghan Toohey (Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) sent a through ball to senior Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), who flicked the ball to Ezurike in the box. Ezurike did not get all of the ball, throwing off the goalkeeper as the shot skipped into the back of the net.
Toohey came through for the Wolverines again in the 83rd minute with a steal at midfield and a through ball to Stachel, who slotted it past the keeper into the right side of the net.
In the first half, the Wolverines nearly capitalized on a free kick in the 26th minute as senior Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) served a low cross to Ezurike, whose shot from inside the box was deflected over the crossbar by the Purdue goalkeeper Carianne Betts, who made 10 saves in the game. Purdue broke through first in the 38th minute with a header that clanged off the right post on a corner kick.
The Wolverines complete the weekend on the road, taking on Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 17) at 1 p.m. in Bloomington, Ind.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the game ... "We got the chances we wanted, I felt like it was just bad luck in the first half. If you looked at the shots, we had the better chances. If you look at the corners, it was six for us to two for them. But they executed really well on their one corner and scored. It has been that way a bit this year where we are getting good chances and just not putting them away. Then in the second half, to come out and get the tying goal in the first minute was huge in terms of momentum. I thought it shifted the whole game for pretty much the whole second half."
U-M Freshman Forward Nkem Ezurike
On what the team talked about during half time ... "We knew that we had to come out strong in the second half. We played well in the first half, but we were still down a goal, so we had to give it our all in the second half. (The goal) came quickly, which was good for us."
