EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team came from behind with a second-half goal from freshman Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) to earn a 1-1 tie at Northwestern on Saturday night (Oct. 2) on Lakeside Field.
Ezurike scored the game-tying marker and had Michigan's best chances at a decisive goal in the late goings. Junior/Sophomore Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) was sharp in net for the Maize and Blue, making a season-high eight saves.
The Wolverines had to battle stiff wind and rain in their faces for much of the first half and Northwestern took advantage with a goal in the 31st minute. The Wildcats got the period's lone score when a ball bounced off a sliding Kopmeyer to the feet of an attacker, who knocked it into the net.
With the wind at its back, Michigan leveled the score at 1-1 in the 58th minute. Ezurike collected the ball in the box and spun off a defender to create the space needed to thread a shot just past the outstretched arm of the diving goalkeeper. Kopmeyer was tested on a one-timer off a free kick three minutes later, responding with a diving stop to keep the score even.
Michigan appeared to have the game-winner inside the final 10 minutes, but a rebound shot by Ezurike was nullified by an offside call. Ezurike again had the game on her foot midway through the first extra frame, finding space in the box before clanging a shot off the far post. On one rush in the second overtime period, Michigan hit the iron again and had two subsequent rebound chances but again was left empty handed.
Michigan welcomes intrastate rival Michigan State to the U-M Soccer Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 9) at 7 p.m.
