ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the fourth consecutive season, the University of Michigan women's soccer team had to settle for a tie with intrastate rival Michigan State, ending in a 0-0 stalemate on Saturday night (Oct. 9) inside U-M Soccer Stadium.

Haley Kopmeyer
Junior/sophomore Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made three saves for her second shutout in as many meetings with the Spartans. Freshman Meghan Toohey (Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) and junior/sophomore Clare Stachel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) paced the Wolverines offensively with four and three shots, respectively.
Michigan had a chance five minutes after the opening whistle on a 40-yard boot by senior Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) that sailed just over the crossbar.
Freshman Shelby Chambers-Garcia (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) and Toohey got together on a give-and-go with nine minutes left in the half, forcing the Spartan goalie to lay out to keep the game scoreless.
Toohey was again at the center of the Michigan offense early in the second half, taking a pass off of a free kick at the top of the box, spinning off a defender and sending a shot just wide of the upper 90.
Midway through the first overtime frame, the Big Ten's second leading scorer Laura Heyboer found herself with the ball in front of the U-M goalmouth. Before she could get a shot off, Heyboer was nullified by a Carron slide tackle. The Maize and Blue got the biggest save of the game from Kopmeyer inside the final minute of the contest. An MSU attacker got open on the right side and tried to slip a shot inside the far bar, but the Wolverine netminder answered the bell with a diving stop.
Michigan will host Purdue on Thursday (Oct. 14) at 7 p.m. inside U-M Soccer Stadium for its lone midweek game of the season. The game will air live on BigTenNetwork.com and on tape-delay on Friday (Oct. 15) at 4 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On his reaction to the game ... "I am so proud of the girls. For two years, we have had to just sit back and defend for 90 minutes and this year, we have enough talent to go forward, go after teams and try and score goals. If you look at the shot totals (tonight), it was 20-14. We have been nowhere near there for two years -- they had all the shots. I am so proud of the effort. I thought we took the game to them, but I thought they were very dangerous in the counter attack.
"I am very positive about (the result). This is a team that, for two years, hasn't been able to go after teams. Now we need a little more quality in terms of creating our chances and putting our chances away. That will come. I thought we outfought them. Little Sarah Stanczyk, against (Laura Heyboer), did a fantastic job, and Meghan Toohey was amazing. Amanda Bowery was sick as a dog tonight, but I kept asking her if she would stay on the field and she did -- she played her heart out."
U-M Senior Sarah Stanczyk
On the outcome ... "We are definitely disappointed that we didn't pull out a win in this game, but we couldn't be happier with the way our team played and the pressure that we put on them. We keep improving every single game and we are so proud that every player that went out there -- and we played 17 of our 26 kids -- and fought as hard as they could. I don't think we could ask for anything else."
U-M Freshman Meghan Toohey
On her first taste of the U-M vs. MSU rivalry ... "It hit us really quickly, especially with the football game earlier. Everybody gets up for it. You listen to the upperclassmen and see how they prepare for the game. As soon as you step out onto the field and you see it, it's natural to feel the rivalry."
