Saturday's game marked the first-ever meeting between Michigan and USC-Upstate.
Michigan's defense held USC-Upstate to 35 points, the least amount of points allowed in a season opener since 1948. The Wolverines defeated Michigan State, 66-33, on Dec. 4, 1948.
The Wolverines held the Spartans to 22-percent shooting (12-of-54), allowing only six field goals in each half.
After taking a 5-3 lead on a basket by Zack Novak, Michigan held the lead for the rest of the game. Michigan's biggest lead of the game was 34 points.
The win is the 598th overall for head coach John Beilein.
Freshman Tim Hardaway Jr. led the Wolverines with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting (3-of-8 3-Pt.; 4-of-6 FT). He added three rebounds and a steal in his collegiate debut.
Darius Morris scored a career-high 17 points (7-of-10 FG; 3-of-5 FT). He added a game-high four assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
Hardaway Jr. and Morris accounted for more than 50 percent of Michigan's scoring output (scored 36 of team's 66 points).
Jordan Morgan (4), Jon Horford (4), Evan Smotrycz (2), and Blake McLimans (2) each scored their first career points at U-M.
Michigan won the rebounding battle, 45-32. Last season, the Wolverines averaged 31 rebounds per contest. Zack Novak led U-M with eight boards.
All eligible players for the Wolverines made an appearance in the win.
For the opening game, Michigan went with the starting lineup of Darius Morris, Zack Novak, Tim Hardaway Jr., Evan Smotrycz, and Jordan Morgan.
A total of seven players appeared in their first career games for U-M. Tim Hardaway Jr., Evan Smotrycz, and Jordan Morgan made their first career starts, while Blake McLimans, Colton Christian, Jon Horford, and Darrick Ervin came off the bench.
The Wolverines held a canned food drive before the game to benefit the Food Gatherers Food Bank of Ann Arbor. Fans attending the game donated more than 2,500 cans.
