
Three Former Wolverines Compete at 2010 World Championships

LAKE KARAPIRO, New Zealand -- Three former University of Michigan rowers raced at the 2010 World Championships, held Oct. 30-Nov. 7 in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand. U-M alumnae Sarah Trowbridge (2003-05), Stesha Carle (2003-06) and Janine Hansen (2003-06) each participated in the event. Carle and Trowbridge raced for Team USA, while Hansen raced for Team Canada.
Hansen, who rowed with Team Canada in the eight, earned a silver medal, taking second place behind the United States eight, which took home its fifth consecutive gold medal at the World Championships. The Canadians crossed the finish line with a time of 6:16.12.
Trowbridge, who raced in the quadruple sculls, reached the finals of the event after her boat won their repechage race to advance to the finals, where the crew finished in fifth place with a time of 7:20.82. Great Britain won the gold with a time of 7:12.78 and Ukraine took silver with a time of 7:14.95. USA moved into fourth place midway through the race but fell back into fifth in the final 1,000 of the race.
Trowbridge was making her fourth appearance with the senior national team.
Carle, who raced in the double sculls with Kate Bertko, took home fifth place in the final. The U.S. duo crossed the finish line with a time of 7:16.99. Great Britain won the event with a time of 7:04.70, followed by Australia with a time of 7:10.08 and Poland with a time of 7:14.40.
Additionally, Tom Peszak, who rowed at Michigan on the men's club team, helped the USA men's eight to a sixth-place finish with a time of 5:40.55. The men's eight advanced to the final by winning their repechage race.
