BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team came from behind to tie Indiana, 150-150, but saw its undefeated streak come to an end at the hands of Texas, 160-140, on Friday afternoon (Nov. 5) inside the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Michigan had gone undefeated in 18 straight (17-0-1) dual meets before falling to the defending national champion Longhorns.
Junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) collected a pair of NCAA consideration times with wins in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and was part of both first-place relay squads. Sophomore Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) alternated lead off and anchor with Madwed on the winning relays.
Michigan shuffled its relay lineups and earned a trio of NCAA 'B' times as a result. Sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), senior James Ridgeway (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), Madwed and Gregg combined for a 1:29.44 first-place run in the 200-yard medley relay.
Both new look 400-yard freestyle relay squads earned consideration times to go with a spot in the top three. Gregg, freshman Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville), freshman Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) and Madwed combined for a 3:00.09 time, getting to the wall just ahead of the field. Ortiz, sophomore Hassaan Abdel Khalik (Mississauga, Ontario/Silverthorn Collegiate), freshman John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy Prep) and sophomore Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. Francis deSales) came in .64 after their teammates, earning an NCAA 'B' time with the third-place finish.
The Wolverines dominated the 200-yard butterfly, posting four of the top five times. Madwed led the pack with his NCAA 'B' time of 1:46.08. Freshman Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton), Wojciechowski and senior Tony Wahl (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Jesuit) finished third through fifth, respectively.
Ridgeway and Whitaker narrowly missed turning event wins into consideration times. Ridgeway made it to the wall in 55.58 in the 100-yard breaststroke, missing the mark by eight one-hundredths of a second. Whitaker remained perfect in the 200-yard individual medley, topping the podium with a time of 1:49.50 -- a quarter of a second off the 'B' standard.
Whitaker's win came at a crucial time in the meet as the Wolverines needed to earn the top three spots in the 200-yard Individual medley and the top two in the 400-yard freestyle relay to catch and pass the Hoosiers. Michigan put three swimmers ahead of IU in the IM but came up .38 short of second place in the relay, settling for the tie.
Michigan will head to the US Grand Prix, Nov. 12-14, in Minneapolis, Minn. Preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m. CST, with final heats starting at 6 p.m. CST.
