ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team defeated Saginaw Valley State, 68-59, in an exhibition contest on Friday night (Nov. 5) inside Crisler Arena. Sophomore guard Darius Morris (Los Angeles, Calif/Windward) led all scorers with 18 points (3-of-8 FG, 12-of-17 FT), while freshman forward Evan Smotrycz (Reading, Mass./New Hampton Prep [N.H.]) chipped in 12 points and redshirt freshman Jordan Morgan (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) had nine points and 15 rebounds.
Michigan went 27-of-41 (66 percent) from the free-throw line and outrebounded Saginaw Valley State by eight (49-41). U-M never trailed in the game and twice led the game by 20 points.
Michigan came out strong in the first half, scoring the first basket of the game at the 19:18 mark on a jump shot from junior guard Zack Novak (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) at the top of the key. The Wolverines went on a 14-3 run, with back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Tim Hardaway, Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) and Smotrycz. With 8:19 left, U-M had its biggest lead of the half, 26-8, before the Cardinals went on an 11-4 run of their own. However, Michigan entered the locker room with a 32-24 lead, shooting 46 percent from the field (12-of-26) in the first half.
The second period opened with slow starts for both teams, but at the 13:22 mark junior guard Stu Douglass (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) gave Michigan a spark when he was fouled and scored on a driving layup, sparking a a 13-0 run for the Wolverines, with four straight free throws from Morris and a three-pointer from sophomore guard Matt Vogrich (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). In all, five reserves saw action, including freshmen Colton Christian (Bellevue, Wash./Hargrave Military Academy [Va.]), Blake McLimans (Hamburg, N.Y./Worcester Academy [Mass.]) and Jon Horford (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge).
The Wolverines will open the regular season next Saturday night (Nov. 13) when they host South Carolina Upstate inside Crisler Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
