ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics program debuted the 2011 edition of the Wolverines at the annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad Saturday (Dec. 5) at Crisler Arena. The exhibition meet scored by celebrity judges, including athletic director Dave Brandon and Michigan Insider radio personalities Sam Webb and Ira Weintraub came down to the final routine on floor exercise with the Maize Team pulling out a 7-6 win.
"It was a great event," said head coach Bev Plocki. "We showcased some of our depth and it was a chance to see how some of our gymnasts perform in competition. We finished the meet healthy and we're looking forward to welcoming back a few of our athletes who are currently banged up.
Seven Michigan freshmen marched out in their debut at Crisler Arena with newcomers Stephanie Colbert (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley), Shelby Gies (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), Tori Kane (Mickleton, N.J./GCIT) and Kristin Nagle (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington North) competing in the intrasquad.
"I've been performing a lot of routines to get ready for the season," said Nagle. "Our seniors have been mentoring our freshman class and they've been helpful preparing us for the season."
"Our celebrity judges are the best," said Plocki. "This was probably our biggest crowd for an intrasquad and they were really into the meet. We're looking forward to even bigger things in our season opener on January 14 against Penn State and Illinois."
The Wolverines open the 2011 season on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Michigan State in tri-meet with Iowa, Western Michigan and the Spartans before opening at home on Friday (Jan. 14) against Penn State and Illinois at 7:30 p.m inside Crisler Arena.
