OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (RV USA Today/No. 19 USCHO) suffered a 4-1 loss at Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday (Feb. 13) at the Qwest Center Omaha.
U-M gave up a single goal in the first and second periods and UNO tied up the win midway through the third period with a pair of goals 23 seconds apart. Junior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) broke up the shutout with 3:27 remaining as Maverick goalie John Faulkner made 36 saves.
The loss drops Michigan into seventh place in the CCHA standings. The Wolverines have four regular-season games remaining over the next two weekends.
Michigan had a pair of high-quality chances in the first minute of play. Sophomore left wing David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) had a half-empty net from the left of the crease but was stopped by Faulkner's out-stretched stick. Shorthanded, junior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) could not convert on a two-on-one break with Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden).
The Mavericks struck first with a power-play goal at 16:51 of the first period. UNO spread out the U-M penalty killers with rapid passes from the right corner to the right slot and over to left slot, where John Kemp easily one-timed the puck into the net.
Similar to the first period, Wohlberg and Rust had good opportunities to start the second frame. However, Wohlberg was stopped on a one-timer from the right circle and Rust was denied on a rebound near the crease.
UNO padded its lead to 2-0 at 13:09 of the second period. After the Mavericks tracked down a dump in behind the U-M net they centered the puck out front into the high slot. Jordan Willert snagged the pass, skirted around two surprised defenders and flipped the puck high over a desperate save attempt from junior goalie Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.).
Hogan kept the Wolverines within striking distance by making a huge point-blank save on Jeric Agosta with 13 seconds to go in the second period.
U-M continued to come up just short in the third period when Caporusso rang a shot off the left post during a power play at 3:45.
UNO then took complete control of the game by scoring goals at 10:01 and 10:24 of final stanza to go up 4-0. Dan Swanson scored both goals on odd-man rushes for the Mavericks.
Caporusso scored from the left edge of the crease at 16:33 to boost his goal streak to three games. Sophomore right wing Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Hagelin had the assists.
With four games remaining in the regular season, Michigan returns to Ann Arbor for a three-game home stand. U-M hosts Northern Michigan for a pair of games at Yost Ice Arena next weekend (Fri-Sat., Feb. 19-20). Both games will begin at 7:35 p.m.
