TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sophomore catcher Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) of the University of Michigan baseball team was named one of Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week, the College Baseball Newspaper announced today (Monday, Feb. 22).
Crank hit .467 (7-for-15) with four home runs and nine runs batted in at the Red Raider Invitational (Feb. 19-21). He is believed to be the first player in the modern era of Division I baseball to hit three home runs on opening day after blasting out a trio of balls against Jacksonville State (Feb. 19). Crank reached base in all four games, playing primarily as a designated hitter.
The second-year backstop hit .294 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 34 games as a rookie.
Michigan will take part in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge next weekend (Fri-Sun., Feb. 26-28) beginning with Louisville on Friday (Feb. 26) at 7:30 p.m. at Dunedin Stadium in Dunedin, Fla.
