DURHAM, N.C. -- University of Michigan junior centerfielder Ryan LaMarre (Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) has been named to the preseason All-America third team by Baseball America. The honor is the second preseason All-America accolade for LaMarre, who was named a third team All-American by the National College Baseball Writers Association in December.
LaMarre comes off a sophomore season in which he was named a second team All-Big Ten Conference selection after leading the team with a .344 batting average, 62 runs batted in and 55 runs scored while finishing second in home runs with 12. LaMarre also led the team with a .599 slugging percentage while stealing 13 bases in 18 attempts. He posted 15 multi-RBI games, including seven games with four or more.
Baseball America annually polls major league scouting directors to vote on the team and make their selections based on performance, talent and professional potential. In the past, the preseason All-America team has been a predictor both of the first round of the draft and of team success. Eleven of the 15 college players drafted in the first round of June's MLB draft appeared on Baseball America's preseason All-America list.
LaMarre and the Wolverines will begin a quest for their fourth Big Ten championship in the last five seasons when they open the 2010 campaign against Jacksonville State and Texas Tech at the Texas Tech Tournament, Feb. 19-21, in Lubbock, Texas.
