OMAHA, Neb. -- Behind a complete-game gem from Cade Montgomery and three Wolverine home runs, the University of Michigan baseball team run-ruled Rutgers 10-0 on Tuesday night (May 19) at Charles Schwab Field in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
Michigan (33-22) led 4-0 entering the seventh, but added six more in the bottom of the seventh to end the contest. Brayden Jefferis opened the seventh with a single before back-to-back home runs from Evan Haeger and Noah Miller put the Wolverines up 7-0. Matthew Ossenfort reached on an error before a single from Dane Morrow and a walk from Drew Culbertson loaded the bases. Jack Laffitte drew a walk to score Ossenfort and Turner walked off the game with a single.
The Wolverines opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-out home run from Jefferis that went 402 feet down the right-field line. U-M added to its lead in the third, when Cooper Mullens opened with a double and scored on a Turner single.
Cade Montgomery (4-1) shut down the Rutgers (26-29) offense, allowing just four baserunners over seven innings of work with no baserunner getting past first base. The Scarlet Knights had one baserunner over the first four innings -- on a first-inning walk -- before collecting their first hit in the fifth, a two-out single.
U-M added to its lead in the fourth, which started with an Ossenfort walk followed by a Morrow double to put two runners in scoring position. Culbertson laced a ball through the left side and doubled the Michigan lead to 4-0 as both runners scored.
Montgomery kept dealing, adding his sixth strikeout in the seventh inning before the Wolverines added on to the lead in the seventh to run-rule the Scarlet Knights. The junior went the distance in a complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit and two walks.
Offensively, Turner went 3-for-5 with three RBI while Morrow scored twice with three hits. Jefferis and Ossenfort each scored two runs, while Culbertson scored and tallied two RBI while reaching three times.
The Wolverines will face the winner of tonight's Washington/Ohio State contest in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday (May 20) at 9 p.m. CT at Charles Schwab Field. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
