KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- University of Michigan men's basketball senior DeShawn Sims (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Pershing HS) and junior Manny Harris (Detroit, Mich./Redford HS) were honored today (Tuesday, March 16) as National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District 7 Second Team selections. In total, the NABC recognized 240 student-athletes, from 24 districts, with all-district honors.
Joining U-M's "Motor City" Duo on the second team were Penn State's Talor Battle, Wisconsin's Trevon Hughes and Northwestern's John Shurna, while the first team was comprised of Purdue's Robbie Hummel and E'Twaun Moore, Ohio State's Evan Turner, Illinois' Demetri McCamey and Michigan State's Kalin Lucas.
Sims, who was named an All-Big Ten second team member, averaged a career-best 16.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while posting seven double-doubles in his final season in Ann Arbor. Sims scored 20-plus points 12 times during his senior campaign and was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Jan. 10, his third career conference Player of the Week honor.
Sims, who was U-M's Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree, was the only Wolverine to start in all 32 games this season. In his career, he played 132 career games, tied for fourth most in school history, including 129 straight contests for the Maize and Blue.
In his career at Michigan, Sims scored 1,584 points, 16th in U-M history, and grabbed 728 rebounds, tied for 13th all-time. He became just the seventh Wolverine to reach 1,500 career points and 700 career rebounds, joining Cazzie Russell, Bill Buntin, Rudy Tomjanovich, Glen Rice, Juwan Howard and LaVell Blanchard in that exclusive club.
Harris, who was an All-Big Ten third team selection, averaged a career-best 18.1 points per game and scored in double figures in 29-of-31 games played this season, including 16 games with 20-plus points. He recorded five double-doubles in his junior season and became just the second Wolverine in history to record a triple-double when he tallied 18 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists against Northern Michigan on Nov. 14.
Harris, who was an NABC All-District 7 first team selection last year, was a top-20 finalist for the Bob Cousy Award and a midseason top-30 finalist for the John R. Wooden Award. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2009 Old Spice Classic and earned his third career Big Ten Player of the Week honor on Nov. 16.
Harris has scored 1,668 points in his three-year U-M career, putting him 10th in school history, making him one of just three juniors, joining Mike McGee (1978-81) and Jalen Rose (1992-94), to reach the 1,600-point plateau. Harris ranks 32nd with 549 career rebounds and is among the top 10 all-time for free throws made (484, 3rd), free throw percentage (82.7 percent, 3rd), three-point field goal attempts (447, 5th), three-point field goals made (142, 6th), free throw attempts (585, 6th), steals (144, 7th) and assists (366, 9th).
Sims and Harris are now eligible for the State Farm Division I All-America teams, to be announced on Saturday, April 3, during the NCAA Final Four.
