SOMERS, Wis. -- Junior swimmer Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) was selected the Counsilman Hunsaker Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday (March 2) after helping the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team to a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships this past weekend (Wed-Sat., Feb. 24-27).
For Clary, it is the second time this season he has won the national award. He also garnered the accolade on Jan. 19 after leading U-M to a first-place finish at the SMU Classic.
The junior swept the Big Ten Swimmer of the Year and Swimmer of the Championships honors for the second consecutive season after winning three individual and two relay titles over the four-day conference meet. Clary won the 200-yard backstroke (1:40.18), 200-yard individual medley (1:42.68) and the 400-yard individual medley (3:40.27). His 200 IM time set a new championships record, while all three times were NCAA 'A' marks and season-best performances.
On the relay front, Clary anchored the 800-yard freestyle relay team to a victory in an NCAA 'A' time of 6:15.80, setting new school, Big Ten, meet and pool records. On the final day of competition, the junior led off the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team, as the quartet finished in 2:53.19. He was also part of the third-place 200-yard freestyle relay team, swimming a 19.30 split as the foursome finished in 1:18.54.
Clary, a two-time NCAA champion in 2009, became only the fourth Wolverine to repeat as Big Ten Swimmer of the Year (Peter Vanderkaay, 2004-06; Chris Thompson 1999, 2001; Tom Dolan 1994-95).
Clary and the Wolverines will now turn their attention the NCAA Championships later this month (March 25-27) at Ohio State University. U-M will look to improve on last year's seventh-place finish.
