EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Senior/junior Charnee Lumbus (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) won the 100-meter hurdles as the University of Michigan women's track and field team sent a small group to the Spartan Invitational on Saturday (April 3) at Ralph Young Field.

Lumbus, competing for only the second time during the outdoor season, crossed the line in 13.66 to win the event. Freshman Sara Nitz (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) finished in 16.40 to claim seventh place.

Sophomore Brittani Williams (Detroit, Mich./Jackson) took third in the 400-meter dash as U-M's lone participant in the one-lap event, finishing in 57.30.

In the pole vault, a trio of Wolverines cleared 3.51 meters (11-06.25), with senior/junior Andrea Marcos (Farmington Hills, Mich./N. Farmington) taking third by virtue of a jump-off. Senior/junior Abbey Breidenstein (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community) finished fifth, with senior/junior Carly Schiffer (Ovid, Mich./Ovid-Elsie) taking sixth to round out U-M's placers.

In the high jump, junior Brittany Petty (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) cleared a career-best 1.65 meters (5-5) for third place, with Nitz jumping 1.60 meter (5-3) to finish right behind her in fourth place.

U-M returns to the West Coast next week (Thu-Sat.., April 8-10), traveling to Westwood, Calif., for the three-day Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. Events begin each day at 10 a.m. PDT from Drake Stadium at UCLA.

N O T E S

• Andrea Marcos set a new personal best in the pole vault, improving her previous best of 3.50 meters.

• Brittani Williams had a season-best time in the 400-meter dash. Williams and Shana Vinson are the only two Wolverines to have participated in the event this outdoor season.

• Sara Nitz competed in three events for the Wolverines, with Charnee Lumbus and Kari Prena competing in two each.

• Kari Prena competed unattached in the shot put and discus.

• Student assistant Tiffany Ofili competed at today's event, finishing second in the 100-meter dash (12.01).
