OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team placed fourth at the Central/South Region Sprints on Sunday (May 16) on Melton Hill Lake. The Wolverines posted 386 points, the bulk of which were earned with fourth-place finishes by the first and second varsity eights. U-M was third in the Central Region, trailing Wisconsin (405 points) and Michigan State (387 points). The first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four races were all won by Virginia, which captured the overall team crown.
In the first varsity eight final, Michigan found itself battling Tennessee for second place heading into the 1,000-meter mark and made move through the Volunteers. The Wolverines kept contact with Michigan State and were ahead of Clemson heading into the home stretch, but a late move by the Tigers heading across the line put them ahead of Michigan (6:31.84) by 0.38 as U-M settled for fourth. Virginia crossed first in 6:23.70, five second ahead of Michigan State, which took second place with a time of 6:28.47, and Clemson, which was third with a time of 6:31.46.
It was a tight race in the second varsity eight and the Wolverines, with a great start off the line, had an early advantage on the field. The Wolverines settled into second place early and, with several big moves just before the 800-meter mark, were in good position in second place with Wisconsin and Ohio State nearby and Virginia leading the field. U-M maintained second through the middle 1,000 but entering the home stretch both Wisconsin and Ohio State made late moves to overtake the Wolverines, who took fourth place with a time of 6:41.84.
The first varsity four placed fifth with a time of 7:37.48, just a little more than a second behind Iowa. The Wolverines fell behind off the line behind Wisconsin and Virginia, with nearly a length lead just 500 meters into the race. Michigan walked through Clemson around the 750-meter mark and kept in contact with Michigan State, which was in third place. U-M maintained fourth place throughout most of the race, but the Hawkeyes sprinted and crossed just ahead of the Wolverines.
U-M's novice eight shell took fourth with a time of 6:58.28. Big Ten rival Wisconsin took first place by a bowball over Virginia, while Ohio State earned third. The Wolverines, who won their repechage race to advance to the A final, also took fourth place at the same race last season.
The open four, which narrowly missed out on making the grand final, had the best race of the season and crossed the finish line in first place in the B final with a time of 7:36.59. Michigan State jumped out to the lead, but the Wolverines continued to stroke and made a move at the 250-meter mark to cut into the Spartans. Notre Dame briefly gained the lead from Michigan State, before U-M made its decisive move at the 1,000-meter mark and walked through Michigan State and Notre Dame while maintaining first on the way to the win.
The Wolverines will find out their NCAA Championship fate on Tuesday (May 18) with the NCAA Selection Show. The show will air live on NCAA.com at 5 p.m.
