CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Four members of the University of Michigan women's rowing team earned All-Central Region honors from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association on Tuesday (May 25). Seniors Ashley Kroll (Edmonds, Wash./Kamiak) and Adrienne Mecham (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens) earned first team accolades, while sophomores Melisa Ongun (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) and Emily Eiffert (Honeoye, N.Y/Honeoye Falls-Lima) garnered second team recognition.
Kroll earns her second first team nod -- she also won first team in 2009 -- while Mecham, a second team honoree in 2009, earns first team honors for the first time in her career. Eiffert and Ongun captured All-Region for the first time in their careers.
Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season. These athletes will be eligible for All-America awards selection following the NCAA Rowing Championships. The NCAA regatta will be held May 28-30 on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
In addition to the All-Region selections, seniors Kristen Henkels (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Farnwood) and Lauren Schneider (Rochester, Mich./Stony Creek) and sophomores Lindsey Healy (Troy, Mich./Madison Heights Bishop Foley) and Julia Darnton (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) each met the requirements for CRCA Scholar Athlete standing. Each is receiving the award for the first time in their career.
CRCA Scholar Athletes must be in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility and, row in their institution's NCAA eligible boats and have a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average for their career.
The Wolverines will hit the water one last time this season at the 2010 NCAA Championships, to be held May 28-30 at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
