
Muresan Falls in First Round of NCAA Singles Championship

ATHENS, Ga. -- Junior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) of the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team fell in the first round 2010 NCAA Singles Championships to No. 54 Katrina Tsang of North Carolina Wednesday (May 26), 6-0, 7-6 (1) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Muresan was broken in the first game of the match, as Tsang ran out to a 6-0 first-set victory. The junior regrouped in the second set, breaking Tsang to take a quick 1-0 advantage. Neither player could stay on serve in the second, eventually resulting in a 5-4 Muresan advantage after she broke Tsang for the third time in the set.
Tsang returned the favor, breaking Muresan to knot the second set at 5-5. Both players then held serve, sending the set to a seven-point tiebreaker. Tsang raced out to a 3-0 advantage in the breaker en route to a 7-1 win for the first round victory.
Muresan, the Big Ten Player of the Year and currently ranked No. 19, ends her season with a 33-14 overall record, putting her second on the Michigan women's tennis all-time single season wins list.
The doubles pair of juniors Whitney Taney (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Rika Tatsuno (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) will square off against the No. 5 pair of Marrit Boonstra and Allie Will of Florida tomorrow (May 27) at 6 p.m.
