ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior pitcher Tyler Burgoon (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) of the University of Michigan baseball team will skip his senior season to sign a professional contract with the Seattle Mariners, head coach Rich Maloney announced on Wednesday (June 16).
Burgoon was chosen by the Mariners with the 312th overall pick in the 10th round of last week's (Mon-Wed., June 7-9) Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
The Wolverines' primary closer throughout the 2010 season, Burgoon tied the program single-season record with 10 saves en route to an All-Big Ten second team selection. After starting the season in the rotation, Burgoon moved to the bullpen and went 4-3 with 10 saves and a 2.23 earned-run average in his 20 appearances in relief. An Academic All-Big Ten honoree, he led the Wolverines with 23 appearances, 72 strikeouts, six wins and 10 saves.
Burgoon made 63 trips to the hill for the Wolverines, collecting 19 saves -- second most in program history -- while going 12-6 with a 4.34 ERA. In addition to his 2010 Academic All-Big Ten distinction, Burgoon has been recognized with a U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award each year on campus.
Burgoon will report to the Everett Aquasox of the Short-Season Class-A Northwest League for the season opener on June 21.
