ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team defeated Michigan State, 3-2, in an exhibition match on Saturday (Aug. 21) at Phyllis Ocker Field. The teams played a standard 70-minute game and then added a 15-minute, seven-on-seven period.
Senior forward Zara Saydjari (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) got the game-winning goal 10 minutes into the first half. Senior forward Vanessa Sekhon (West Vancouver, B.C./Collingwood) tallied 10 minutes into the second half and freshman forward Michelle Roberts (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) scored in the 63rd minute. MSU responded with a goal late in regulation time and added a marker on a penalty stroke in the extra stanza.
U-M's offense put pressure on MSU in the first five minutes with back-to-back penalty-corner opportunities. Saydjari eventually broke through on a rush at 10:24, receiving a pass on the right side, skirting around a defender and beating goalie short-side near the right post. Michigan dominated the first half of play, registering eight shots, five of which were on goal. U-M's defense permitted just one shot, which came off MSU's only penalty-corner chance.
The Maize and Blue boosted its advantage to 2-0 on a penalty corner at 44:12. Senior Meredith Way (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) had been the striker on U-M's first three penalty corners of the afternoon. However, this time she faked the shot and fed the ball left for a one-timer by Sekhon that rattled off the back of the cage.
A blatant Spartan turnover led to U-M's third goal of the day. MSU tried to transfer the ball from the left side of the field to the right. An errant pass was intercepted just outside the circle by Roberts, who took a few strides and hammered a shot between the goalie's legs.
MSU got one goal back at 68:09. The Spartans moved the ball to the left-end line before making a goal-mouth pass that was tipped in by Camille Dagorn.
The Spartans notched the lone goal of the extra period when Angela Pagura converted on a penalty stroke at 73:02.
Michigan starts the 2010 season next weekend (Sat-Sun., Aug. 28-29) at the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C. U-M opens with defending national champion North Carolina at noon on Saturday. The following day Michigan faces Wake Forest at 2 p.m.
