ANN ABROR, Mich. -- Despite holding a 32-8 shot advantage in the match, the University of Michigan women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw with Eastern Michigan on Sunday (Aug. 22) inside the brand new U-M Soccer Stadium. Freshman Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) netted her second goal in as many matches for the Wolverines.
Headers from sophomore Eunnie Kim (Hubley, Nova Scotia/Sir John A McDonald) and senior Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) gave U-M its best scoring chances in the first half, but both attempts sailed wide of the goal. The Wolverines outshot Eastern Michigan, 16-5, and held an edge in corners, 5-0, in the opening half.
At the outset of the second half, U-M nearly capitalized on another header by Bowery that was punched away by Eagles keeper Monique Budani.
The Wolverines' attack finally paid off in the 66th minute, as Ezurike snuck one past Budani to give the home team the 1-0 advantage. Ezurike, who also scored in Michigan's 3-1 victory over Detroit on Friday (Aug. 20), received a long, midfield pass from junior Kristen Goncalves (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard Catholic), split two defenders and buried the shot into the back-left portion of the goal. However, with eight minutes remaining in the match, Eastern Michigan tied the match up. Freshman Tori McCombs (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) had one final chance with 10 seconds remaining in regulation on a breakaway, but her shot fell right of the goal, sending the match to overtime.
Senior Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) had the best opportunity in extra time, striking one off the crossbar with less than a minute to play in the second overtime.
The Wolverines kick off a four-game road swing at the USD Tournament in San Diego, Calif. Michigan will face Pepperdine on Friday (Aug. 27) and San Diego on Sunday (Aug. 29) in a pair of 5 p.m. PDT contests.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the draw against Eastern Michigan ... "Soccer is a funny game sometimes. Normally when you come away with 32 shots and hold the other team to eight, you win, but tip your hat to their team, their defense, and especially their keeper, who had a fantastic match. We've got a young team here with a good mix of veterans. With each game, they are understanding how to play with each other and understanding our attack. We had a lot of chances tonight, but I am incredibly happy with our players. They played their hearts out tonight."
On the new atmosphere at the U-M Soccer Stadium ... "I thought it was fantastic the whole weekend. It was rocking tonight, that's for sure. Getting over 950 fans for a 7 p.m. match on a Sunday isn't easy, but they made their impact tonight. We've got such an intimate stadium. The fans are on top of you and are loud, and it really makes for a great atmosphere. It feels like soccer should."
