SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team broke a scoreless tie in the 70th minute to clip Pepperdine, 1-0, in the opening game of the USD Tournament on Friday night (Aug. 27) at San Diego's Torero Stadium.
Senior Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) netted the Michigan goal and junior/sophomore Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made it stand up with three saves en route to her seventh career shutout.
The Wolverines collected the game's lone goal at 69:07 on a Bowery deflection to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) knocked down a clearing attempt and carried the ball to the end line to start the goal push. She crossed it in the box to junior/sophomore Clare Stachel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), who fired a shot that was batted down in front of the goalmouth, where Bowery used a half bicycle kick to put it into the back of the net.
Michigan was in an attacking mood in the early goings. Led by freshman Nkem Ezurike's (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) two attempts on goal, U-M outshot Pepperdine, 5-2, in the opening half. Kopmeyer was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the second half, making all three of her saves, including one as time ran out.
The Maize and Blue will take on USD Tournament host and No. 22-ranked San Diego on Sunday (Aug. 29) at 5 p.m. PDT.

Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the win ... "This was a big step for us. Pepperdine is a very good team. It was the first time we have really gone after a team of this caliber, not just hanging back and trying to sneak a win. We outshot and out-cornered them. It was a good team win. For the team, it is an important step. We now have the confidence to go after teams like that and beat them. It came down to set plays, which we have been working on. (Amanda) Bowery is always good at finishing them."
On the goal ... "The goal initially came off a long throw from (Meghan) Toohey that fell to Jackie (Carron). She pushed the ball by the defense and crossed it in to Clare (Stachel), who volleyed it from eight or 10 yards out. (Amanda) Bowery played it over her head, back into goal. If she lifted her leg off the ground, it would be a bicycle kick, but it looked more like Gumby. It was a great goal and great team win."
