ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team overcame an early deficit to defeat Akron, 2-1, in exhibition action on Monday afternoon (Aug. 9) on the West Practice Field of the U-M Soccer Complex. The Wolverines used goals in the second and third of three 30-minute periods to secure the victory.
Junior Courtney Mercier (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored in the 50th minute to tie the game, before freshman Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) put the Maize and Blue ahead in the 77th minute.
The Wolverines drew one of their 12 corner kicks in the middle of the second frame and converted to tie the game at 1-1. Mercier got her foot on a serve from senior Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), booting the ball out of a scrum and into the back of the net.
Ezurike gave Michigan the 2-1 advantage, one-touching a pass from junior/sophomore Clare Stachel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) into the cage. Stachel came storming down the right wing and put a low pass to the foot of the U-M freshman, who redirected the game-winner into the goal.
Michigan will wrap up the exhibition slate on Friday (Aug. 13), taking on Central Michigan at 6 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
