TOLEDO, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team erased a two-goal deficit early in the second half to salvage a 2-2 tie at Toledo on Friday (Sept. 10) inside the Scott Park Soccer Complex.
Sophomore Eunnie Kim (Hubley, Nova Scotia/Sir John A MacDonald) tallied two assists, helping to set up goals by senior Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and freshman Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville).
Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) was called on to make several spectacular saves in the late goings as part of a four-save performance.
Despite controlling the ball for much of the first half, U-M found itself on the short end of a 2-0 score. The Wolverine response was leveled quickly after halftime, as the Maize and Blue dented the twine twice in less than 12 minutes early in the second frame.
Freshman Meghan Toohey (Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) set up the Wolverine scoring drive on the first zone incursion of the second half, drawing a foul at the top of the Rockets' box to set up a free kick. Kim put a toe on the ball, allowing Carron to fire a low linedrive through a small hole in the Toledo wall and into the back of the cage.
A free kick 10 minutes later tied the game at 2-2 with 34:44 remaining in regulation. Carron took the kick from eight yards off the endline on the left side, sending a cross to senior Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), who redirected the ball into a scrum in front of the goalmouth. Ezurike was the second Wolverine to strike the ball, sending it into the back of the net.
Kopmeyer was busy in the second half, having to withstand five straight corner kicks and stopping a free kick from three yards off the left post and the subsequent rebound attempt after Carron drew a foul when she stymied a breakaway before Toledo could get off a shot.
Michigan held the play in the first overtime period, owning a 5-0 shot advantage, before the tables turned toward Toledo in the final overtime frame. Neither team found the golden goal, settling for the tie as time expired.
Michigan will dedicate the brand new U-M Soccer Stadium on Friday (Sept. 17) after a 5 p.m. contest with UMass. The Wolverines' game will be the first half of a doubleheader with the men's team.
