ORONO, Maine -- The University of Michigan field hockey team allowed a goal with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation in a 2-1 loss to the Maine Black Bears on Thursday (Sept. 2) at the Maine Field Hockey Complex.
U-M scored early in the second half, before Maine knotted the game up with 20 minutes remaining. The Black Bears then pulled out the win with a dozen seconds to play in regulation.
Michigan's lone goal scorer was senior Alicia Mayer (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove), who gave U-M a 1-0 advantage at 38:54 when she carried the ball into the circle along the right side and flipped it over goalie Brittany Fleck.
The Black Bears responded at 49:06 when Kelly Newton carried the ball from right to left across the top of the U-M circle and sent a backhand shot across the grain that bounced into the right side of the goal.
Despite three of its four penalty corners in the final 15 minutes, U-M could not retake the lead.
Maine earned the victory with 12 seconds to go on a sharp-angle goal by Kallie Aldus from the right side. Stephanie Gardiner threw the ball towards the front of the cage, where Aldus collected it and scored into the far side of the cage.
Michigan opposes No. 5 Connecticut on Sunday (Sept. 5). Game time is noon at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex.
