ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two goals in the final six minutes proved the difference as the University of Michigan women's soccer team fell by a 2-0 tally to Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 26) inside the U-M Soccer Stadium.
Neither team could gain an advantage in the first frame. The Wolverines threatened in the sixth minute when senior Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) sent freshman Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) on a breakaway, but the play was broken up in front of the goalmouth by the Buckeye defense.
The Wolverines got back-to-back chances beginning in the 44th minute with two Wolverines finding Ezurike in scoring position. Freshman Kayla Mannino (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Avondale) developed the first chance, screwing a Buckeye into the ground before sending a cross to Ezurike, who headed the ball wide. A minute later, senior Sarah Stanczyk (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) sent Ezurike on another breakaway that resulted in a shot right on the goalkeeper.
Ohio State broke open the match with two goals in the final six minutes to take the victory.
The Wolverines take to the road for a Big Ten showdown at Northwestern on Saturday (Oct. 2) in Evanston, Ill. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. CDT.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the game ... "In the first half, we did not get enough pressure on Ohio State. I thought we could have possessed (the ball) better than we did -- we didn't posses the ball very well. In the second half, we changed up the look. We put pressure on them higher up the field and were able to create a few chances, but not enough to put us over the top today."
U-M Senior Midfielder Sarah Stanczyk
On if the loss is harder because of the rivalry ... "This outcome definitely hurts a little bit more with the rivalry, but more because it was our first Big Ten match of the season. We have been coming off such a high because of the wins we have been producing in non-conference games. To lose this at the end of the game after you put in such an effort is a pretty big blow, but we are just looking to bounce back for next week."
