Hennessy's Late Tally Helps U-M Chase Off Grizzlies

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Junior Meaghan Hennessy (Westlake, Ohio/Magnificat) netted the game-winner in the 74th minute to lead the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 1-0 triumph at Oakland on Friday (Sept. 3) at the OU Soccer Field. The Maize and Blue upped its record against teams from the state of Michigan to 7-0-4 under third-year head coach Greg Ryan.
Freshman Kayla Mannino (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Avondale) played a ball on the right side of the box and crossed a pass waist-high pass into the center of the cage where a charging Hennessy redirected it into the twine. It was Mannino's first career point.
Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser), who collected her eighth career shutout to match Jessica Jones (8, 1995-98) for fourth all-time, made it stand up inside the final three minutes, leaping for and grabbing a 50-50 ball ahead of a Golden Grizzly crashing the net.
The Wolverines earned 10 first-half corner kicks but had trouble finding the box as a persistent wind whipped across the field. Michigan's best chance in the opening period came a little more than two minutes after the opening whistle on a low attempt at the far bar by freshman Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville), who was streaking down the right side. Kopmeyer did not have any work during the first half, as the U-M attack kept Oakland without a shot and limited it to just three incursions.
Michigan concludes the longest road trip of the season next Friday (Sept. 10) in Toledo, Ohio, taking on the Rockets at 5 p.m.
