DALLAS, Texas -- Junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) won both butterfly events to lead a nine-member contingent from the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team to a third straight SMU Classic title on Saturday (Jan. 15) inside Perkins Natatorium. The Wolverines also kicked off day two with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay to help amass 318 points at the two-day event, 16 more than second-place North Carolina.

Madwed posted NCAA consideration times en route to victories the 100-yard (47.99) and 200-yard butterfly (1:45.28) and reached the 'B' standard with a runner-up showing in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.23).

Freshman Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) finished second in both individual medley events and posted his collegiate-best time in the 400 IM (3:47.62). Sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) shaved nearly half a second off his career best in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall second in 49.05.

Four different Wolverines swam anchor as the Maize and Blue relays generated 84 points on three runner-up finishes and the first-place 200-yard medley relay (1:29.42) squad. Each relay run garnered an NCAA 'B' time.

The group of nine will reunite with the entire squad for the Big Ten home opener against Purdue on Sunday (Jan. 16) at Canham Natatorium, beginning at 5 p.m.
