
Michigan Squeezes Orange Bowl Win to End Winter Training Trip

KEY LARGO, Fla. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team earned first-place finishes across every event en route to a team title at the Orange Bowl Classic on Tuesday (Jan. 4) at Jacobs Aquatics Center. The event, which marks the end of U-M's winter training trip, was swum in short-course meters.
Sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) swam on both winning relays and was first to the wall in the 50-meter backstroke. Ortiz anchored the 200-meter freestyle relay and swam third on the 200-meter medley relay.
Senior James Ridgeway (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) was the lone two-time individual winner on the day, scoring top finishes in the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke. Seven other Wolverines posted first-place finishes, including four by the sophomore class. Second-year swimmers Connor McCarroll (Portland, Ore./Jesuit), Kevin Wilson (Short Hills, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), Ryan Feeley (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Hassaan Abdel Khalik (Mississauga, Ontario/Silverthorn Collegiate) each took home a top finish.
The Wolverines travel to No. 14-ranked Indiana on Saturday (Jan. 8) at 11 a.m. to open up the Big Ten slate at IU's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.
