ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 7 USA Today/No. 8 USCHO) tromped the Michigan State Spartans by a score of 4-0 on Saturday (Jan. 8) at Yost Ice Arena. Senior co-captain Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) led the Maize and Blue with two goals to improve his career totals against MSU to 11 goals and eight assists in 18 games. He had three goals and one assist in two games this weekend.
Senior goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) recorded 28 saves en route to his second shutout of the season, both of which are against MSU -- the first coming in the Big Chill at the Big House. Tonight's shutout marked the first time since the 1952-53 campaign that Michigan blanked Michigan State twice in one season.
After a scoreless opening period, Michigan broke the stalemate at 5:50 of the middle stanza with a power-play goal from Hagelin. Receiving the dish from junior defenseman Brandon Burlon (Nobleton, Ontario) by the outer edge of the right circle, Hagelin flung the puck toward the net and, thanks to a screen from senior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), the puck squeaked by Spartan goaltender Drew Palmisano for the 1-0 icebreaker.
Hagelin played double duty on U-M's second goal of the night at 5:14 of the final frame. Hagelin won the faceoff at the right circle out to senior defenseman Chad Langlais (Spokane, Wash.), who wristed a shot into traffic, and it was Hagelin again who redirected the puck through the defenders and past Palmisano for the two-goal lead.
Two penalties committed against Hunwick gave the Maize and Blue a five-on-three opportunity, on which sophomore center A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) capitalized at 15:20. The tic-tac-toe tally developed as freshman defenseman Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) received the puck at the point, played it down low to senior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario), whose cross-crease pass found Treais waiting at the back door for the finish.
Freshman defenseman Mac Bennett (Narragansett, R.I.) registered his first career goal as a Wolverine with 2:11 left in regulation to cap the scoring at 4-0.
The Maize and Blue takes on Ferris State in a home-and-home series next weekend (Fri-Sat., Jan. 14-15). Friday's contest will be at Yost Ice Arena at 7:35 p.m., while Saturday's game will be in Big Rapids at 7:05 p.m.
