ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two second-half goals from sophomore Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) were the difference as the 10th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team shut out Penn State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16) at Ocker Field. Michigan extended its winning streak to five games while snapping Penn State's streak of nine straight wins.

The Michigan defense was the story of the game as it held Penn State shotless for the last 60:36 of the match. PSU's Kelsey Amy had all three shots, including one that went just wide in the 10th minute. Both teams had three shots at the half, with Penn State holding a 4-1 corner advantage.
Mack broke through with the game-winning goal at 43:16 on a corner, deflecting a shot from senior Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) into the back of the net for her 10th goal of the season. It also was Bain's seventh assist. Eight minutes later, Mack added insurance, beating Nittany Lion keeper Ayla Halus low off an assist from freshman Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer). Michigan had all 10 shots in the second half on its way to the Wolverines' fifth shutout of 2011.
Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) picked up her fifth win of the season in net, stopping one shot. Halus had nine saves for the Nittany Lions. Michigan also had an 11-5 advantage on penalty corner.
Michigan hits the road for a two-game trip next weekend. The Maize and Blue visits East Lansing, Mich., to face Michigan State Friday afternoon (Oct. 21) at 4 p.m. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m.
