EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The seventh-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team had a pair of second-half goals and held Michigan State without a shot in a 2-0 road win on Friday afternoon (Oct. 21) at Ralph Young Field. Michigan, which had 10 shots apiece in each half, had most of the possession in the first 35 minutes, but the game was scoreless at the break. Michigan State's Molly Cassidy had six saves in the first period, keeping the Maize and Blue off the scoreboard.
The Wolverines scored the game-winning goal in the 41st minute of play. Michigan earned one of 10 corners in the contest and senior Eileen Brandes (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) pushed to classmate Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional), who passed to freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes). Her shot beat Cassidy to the left for her fourth goal of the season. Michigan then added insurance in the 61st minute. Freshman Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored on a pass from the right side by classmate Axelle Wouters (Antwerp, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe Antwerp).
Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) picked up her sixth win of the season in net, as she did not face a shot. Cassidy ended the game with nine saves.
Michigan travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face No. 2 North Carolina this Sunday (Oct. 23) at 1 p.m.
