OXFORD, Ohio -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 9 USA Today/No. 8 USCHO) was swept for the first time this season as Miami University (No. 13 USA Today/No. 13 USCHO) beat the Wolverines, 3-0, on Saturday (Feb. 5) at Steve Cady Arena. The RedHawks won the series opener, 4-2, on Friday (Feb. 4). Tonight's loss drops Michigan to third place in the CCHA standings, while Miami takes over first place. Notre Dame, which was idle this weekend, is in second place.
Michigan had a 13-7 shot advantage and had three power plays to Miami's one in the first period, but it was the RedHawks who opened a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Reilly Smith scored on a rebound off the end boards by banking the puck off senior goalie Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) at 8:20. Smith tallied again at 15:16 by capitalizing on a rebound on the heels of a Miami breakaway chance.
The home team put the game away when it was awarded a five-on-three power play for a full two minutes midway through the second period. The RedHawks scored on a one-timer by Pat Cannone at 10:42 to make it 3-0. Two more Michigan penalties in the last eight minutes of the second period disrupted any offensive pressure the Wolverines mustered.
Neither team scored in the third period, which involved just a few isolated scoring chances either way until the final minutes. Michigan had two separate five-on-three power plays in the last three minutes but could not solve Cody Reichard, who made 23 saves.
With just three weeks and six games remaining in the regular season, Michigan returns to Ann Arbor for a four-game home stand. The Ohio State Buckeyes visit Yost Ice Arena next weekend (Fri-Sat., Feb. 11-12) for a two-game set that will be televised by the Big Ten Network each night starting at 7:35 p.m.
