Wolverines Wrap Up Spring Break Trip against Miami in Tampa

MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Michigan rowing team concluded its annual spring break trip with a scrimmage against Miami on Saturday (March 5) on Hillsborough River in Tampa, Fla. The race was U-M's final tuneup before opening the 2011 season against Ohio State in Columbus on March 26.
The teams raced five pieces limited to three minutes each, instead of a standard 2,000-meter race. The boats had stroke rates ranging from 30-34 stokes per minute with the stroke rate increasing with each piece. U-M boated three even eights and two novice eights, while the Hurricanes brought one varsity eight and one novice eight. The Wolverines' top boat won each of the pieces with the highlight coming in the fourth piece when U-M's top boat and second varsity eight tied for first place.
U-M's novice teams also raced five pieces limited to three minute each, with the Wolverines winning each of the pieces. The Wolverines boated a first and second novice eight, while the Hurricanes boated one novice eight.
Michigan opens the spring season in earnest on March 26 when it travels to Columbus, Ohio, for a dual meet with rival, Ohio State. The race is scheduled for 9 a.m.
