MADISON, Wis. -- Senior Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) and sophomore Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team were both chosen as unanimous first team All-Big Ten selections on Thursday (April 28) at the Big Ten Awards banquet. They both earned the honor for a second time in their respective careers, also earning it last season.
King is ranked No. 21 in the nation for singles and owns records of 26-8 (singles) and 17-13 (doubles). He has amassed a 19-3 record in dual matches (all at No. 1) and a 10-5 mark against ranked opponents this season. Only four men in program history since 1970 have had as many wins at the No. 1 spot in singles for dual matches -- Ed Nagel (45-9 in 1987), Michael Leach (24-7 in 1982; won NCAA singles championship), Jeff Etterbeek (19-6 in 1977, 18-5 in 1976) and Victor Amaya (20-2 in 1973). Last season, King was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the ITA/Midwest Region Rookie of the Year.
Jung, the team captain, is ranked No. 48 in the nation for singles and has a record of 25-10, the most wins he has earned in a season at Michigan; he had 18, 19 and 21 wins each of the last three years, respectively. He also holds an 18-14 record in doubles, and is currently fourth on the school's all-time list for career doubles wins with 87. He needs three doubles wins to tie the record of 90, held by Brian Hung (2004-07), Matko Maravic (2005-08) and Mike Sroczynski (2007-10). For his career, Jung is 83-62 in singles and 87-59 in doubles. Last season, Jung was the national recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship, as well as the Big Ten Conference's male nominee for the NCAA Sportsmanship Award.
Freshman Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) was the team's nominee for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Michigan opens the Big Ten Tournament in the 4/5 match tomorrow (Friday, April 29) against No. 18 Illinois at 10 a.m. CDT in Madison.
