COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team had a day of mixed results in the annual Big Ten/ACC Double Dual hosted by Ohio State on Sunday (April 3) on the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River. U-M dropped the first varsity eight and second varsity eight races to No. 15 Clemson before rebounding in the fours and the novice boats, and battled against defending national champion and second-ranked Virginia but dropped each of its races.
U-M opened the day's racing against Clemson and despite losses in the first and second varsity eights, the Wolverines rebounded in the fours. The momentum shift started in the second varsity eight race. The Wolverines fell behind by two seats early in the race, a lead that Clemson held through the 1,000-meter mark, before U-M started making a move. U-M evened the race with about 500 meters left but could not pull out the race late, crossing the finish line 0.21 behind the Tigers.
The Michigan fours picked up their first races of the season with wins over both sets of Clemson fours. Clemson took early leads in both races, jumping out to three-seat leads, but the Wolverines' race plans allowed them to make up ground in the middle leg of both races. In the first varsity eight race, U-M used a big move at the 1,000-meter mark to overtake the Tigers, a lead the Wolverines maintained for the remainder of the race. Michigan's second varsity four raced a similar race plan to the first varsity four and after falling slightly behind at the start of the race used a strong middle to pull out the win. U-M's third varsity four took third place just behind the Clemson second varsity four.
U-M novice boats continued a strong start to the spring season. Despite a tight race through the first 400 meters, the Wolverine boat started to move away at the 750-meter mark and opened up five seats of open water on the Clemson boat, a lead U-M rode to a 10-second win.
Against Clemson, the Wolverine second novice raced against the Ohio State novice boat and a Clemson fourth varsity eight. U-M took an early lead on the field and raced a tight race with the Clemson varsity boat before coming up just short in a photo finish. The Wolverines defeated Ohio State for the second consecutive weekend and finished just two seconds behind the Clemson varsity boat.
In the later races against Virginia, the Wolverines dropped each of the four varsity races with the highlight coming in the first varsity four race. Virginia boated two boats in the race and Michigan defeated the second varsity boat by a 10-second margin. In the second and third varsity four races, both teams fielded two boats and, although U-M was outmatched in the race of the top boats, the U-M third varsity eight defeated the Virginia third varsity boat by the largest margin of the day by crossing the finish line with a time of 8:40.77 ahead of UVA, which crossed with a time of 9:04.15.
The U-M first novice eight raced Virginia's fourth varsity eight as the Cavaliers did not field a novice boat. Virginia took an early lead and raced out to three lengths of open water, but the U-M novice boat made a late push to cut it to one length of open water as the finish line, just 11 seconds behind the Virginia varsity boat.
In the final race of the day, the second novice eight rowed against its same competitors with the same results. The Clemson varsity boat took the race with a time of 7:46.90, followed by Michigan with a time of 8:04.18 and Ohio State finishing third with a time of 8:18.71.
Michigan heads to East Lansing, Mich., for the Big Ten Double Dual next Saturday (April 9), U-M will take on Big Ten foes Wisconsin and Minnesota starting at 9 a.m.
