WESTWOOD, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team added two more event wins to its total on Saturday afternoon (April 9) at UCLA's Johnson/Joyner Invitational at Drake Stadium. The Wolverines ended the three-day event (April 7-9) with five victories.
Both of Michigan's wins on Saturday came in the field as the Wolverines won the high jump and the discus. Senior Lauren Young (Edina, Minn./Edina) won the invitational section of the high jump, clearing a personal-record 1.75 meters (5-8 3/4) as the only U-M competitor in the event. Redshirt freshman Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) also set a new personal record in the pole vault, clearing 3.90 meters (12-9 1/2) to finish in third.
The throwing corps once again had a strong showing, led by Michigan's 1-2 finish in the discus. Sophomore Erin Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) won with a throw of 50.95 meters (167-02) on her first attempt, which held up throughout the event. Redshirt junior Allison Liske (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) recorded a mark of 48.43 meters (158-11) on her final throw to move into second place. Liske added a runner-up finish in the shot put to her weekend, throwing 15.14 meters (49-8 1/4) on her fifth attempt to move into first before being overtaken on the final attempt by Na'I Leni.
Making her debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday (April 8), freshman Megan Weschler (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) won the race by almost seven seconds, clocking in at 11:07.56. Michigan's other distance win came courtesy of senior Danielle Tauro (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) in the 5,000-meter run. Running the race for the first time this season, Tauro set a new meet record by winning in 16:32.27.
Michigan's mid-distance duo of sophomores Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven) went 2-3 in the invitational section of the 800-meter run. Smith narrowly missed overtaking Saucony's Nicole Sifuentes, finishing in 2:06.87, .09 behind the winner. Addison was right behind Smith, stopping the clock in 2:07.13 for third place.
Fifth-year senior Alisha Cole (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) picked up Michigan's lone win in the sprints, winning the open section of the 400-meter dash in 55.46. She also anchored Michigan's runner-up 4x400-meter relay team of junior Alexandria Williams (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), senior Jennifer Neville (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) and Addison to a time of 3:45.49.
The Wolverines head back to the state of Florida for the third time this season, participating in the Tom Jones Invitational at Florida on Saturday (April 16) in Gainesville, Fla. The hammer throw will begin at 1 p.m.
