ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior Sarah Curtis (Reno, Nev./Reno HS) of the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team and senior Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) of the U-M ice hockey team were voted to Capital One Academic All-District 4 at-large teams on Thursday (May 19) as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Curtis was named to the women's first team, while Hagelin was picked for the men's second team. As a first-team selection, Curtis is eligible for the national Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot.
To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. A student-athlete must also have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and have completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Curtis received her bachelor's degree in biology and is currently enrolled in the Rackham Graduate School, majoring in kinesiology. Curtis was U-M's 2011 female recipient of the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor award. In 2009 and 2010, she was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team. She is also a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a five-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement Award recipient.
Curtis achieved All-America second team status three times (bars, 2011; all-around 2010, '11) and was a four-time All-Big Ten honoree (first team: 2008, '09, '10; second team: 2011), highlighted by a Big Ten championship on bars in 2008. Curtis captained the Wolverines in 2009 and '11. She was the team co-MVP in 2008, '09 and '10.
Hagelin earned his bachelor's degree in sport management last month. He was U-M's 2011 male honoree for the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Hagelin was U-M's representative on the CCHA Scholar-Athlete Team in each of the three years that he was eligible and earned Academic All-Big Ten distinction three times. He also collected a U-M Athletic Academic Achievement laurel all four years.
A left wing for the Wolverines, Hagelin led the team in scoring as a junior (19-31-50) and a senior (18-31-49). He served as an alternate captain in 2009-10 when U-M won the CCHA Tournament. He was a co-captain for the 2010-11 squad that captured the CCHA regular-season title and finished as the NCAA Tournament runner-up. In 2011, Hagelin was named an Old Time Hockey West All-America second team honoree, the CCHA Best Defensive Forward, an All-CCHA first teamer, and a finalist for the CCHA Player of the Year. Hagelin signed a contract with the NHL's New York Rangers following his senior season.
