DAYTON, Ohio -- Despite outshooting its opponent by a 13-2 margin, the University of Michigan women's soccer team fell at Dayton, 2-0, in the team's exhibition opener on Friday (Aug. 12) at Baujan Field.
The Flyers struck first about 90 seconds before halftime when a shot snuck past redshirt junior goaltender Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) at the near post. The Wolverines held a 10-1 advantage on shots in the second half but could not put any of them past the Dayton defense. The Flyers added an insurance goal in the 75th minute to make the score, 2-0.
Sophomore Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) led the Michigan attack with five shots, while fellow sophomores Shelina Zadorsky (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Tori McCombs (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) each recorded two apiece.
The Wolverines officially open the season next Friday (Aug. 19), hosting Akron at 7 p.m. inside the U-M Soccer Stadium. Posters and schedule cards will be available while supplies last, and the team will sign autographs after the match.
