ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a goal in the 89th minute by sophomore Ezekiel Harris (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth HS) to notch a 2-2 tie against Georgetown on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 11) at the U-M Soccer Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the Wolverines and Hoyas each tallied a pair of second-half goals to set up overtime. Both squads had limited chances in the two 10-minute overtime sessions.
After a scoreless first half, Georgetown thought that it scored the game's first goal in the 48th minute of the contest on a set piece from 20 yards out, but the indirect kick by Steve Neumann was not touched by anyone, disallowing the apparent score.
The Hoyas did find the back of the net a few minutes later, scoring at 49:15, as Andy Reimer headed the ball past redshirt freshman goalkeeper Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills HS) on the lower right side for a 1-0 lead. The assist on the goal came on a cross from Ian Christianson.
Michigan responded with the equalizer less than two minutes later as sophomore Fabio Villas Boas Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/South Kent School [Conn.]) threaded a pass from the left side of the 18 across to the middle and sophomore Malcolm Miller (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill HS) buried it behind Tomas Gomez on the lower left. The goal came at 50:50 of the contest.
The Wolverines had an opportunity to take the lead, but Pereira's left-footed shot to the lower right was saved on a diving effort by Gomez. Pereira made a great individual move from about 12 yards out to get the clear shot on goal.
The Hoyas took a 2-1 lead at 73:09 on a shot from Steve Neumann just inside the 18. The shot from the right side of the formation beat Grinwis over the right shoulder to the upper left corner of the goal.
Michigan tied it up in the 89th minute off a corner kick. Senior captain Adam Shaw (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch HS) took the set piece and crossed it to Harris, who flicked it across the six-yard box. The ball caromed off a Georgetown defender and past Gomez on the right post. The goal that sent the game into overtime came at 88:19.
In the first half, Michigan had a few good offensive chances off corner kicks and some crisp passing sequences, but its attempts were blocked or sailed over the goal. Both teams had six shots apiece in the first half, with Georgetown edging Michigan in corner kicks by a 4-3 margin. The Hoyas were whistled for 10 fouls, while the Wolverines were called for six fouls.
Michigan heads on the road for midweek game at Detroit this Wednesday (Sept. 14) at 5 p.m.
