
Late Buckeye Goal Snaps Michigan's Four-Game Win Streak

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Buckeyes' forward Danica Decker's second goal of the game with 1:32 remaining gave Ohio State a 2-1 victory, snapping the 11th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team's four-game win streak on Friday afternoon (Sept. 23) at Buckeye Varsity Field. The conference opener for both teams will be televised on the Big Ten Network this Sunday (Sept. 25) at noon.
Ohio State scored the game's first goal in the fifth minute as Decker's shot from the left side of the circle went in with an assist from Arielle Cowie. Michigan knotted the game at one in the 14th minute. Michigan was awarded a penalty stroke on an OSU foul and senior Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) beat Ally Tunitis to the right corner for her second goal of the year. Michigan had a 7-4 shot advantage in the first 35 minutes and attempted three penalty corners.
Michigan also had a shot advantage (6-5) in the second half, but the Buckeyes scored the only goal, which came from Decker on a direct penalty corner with assists from Berta Queralt and Laura Napolitano with 1:32 left.
Fifth-year senior Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) had three saves on the day and freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes) had a defensive save in the first half. OSU's Tunitis stopped six shots and the Buckeye backs had two defensive saves.
Michigan ends its brief road trip this Saturday morning (Sept. 24) at Miami. Game time is at 11 a.m. in Oxford, Ohio.

There have been eight straight one-goal contests between Michigan and Ohio State, dating back to the 2006 season.
This is the second straight 2-1 Ohio State win over Michigan in the regular season. OSU defeated the Maize and Blue, 2-1, in Ann Arbor on Oct. 22, 2010.
Bryn Bain scored her first career goal on a penalty stroke. It also was the first stroke chance for a Michigan player this season.
Aline Fobe had Michigan's fourth defensive save of the year. Hannah Dawson has two, while Leslie Smith has one on the season.
