PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Sophomore Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) capped a furious rally with a goal 1:52 into overtime to lift the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team past Temple, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 3) in game one of the Temple Invitational at Geasey Field. The Wolverines, who have now won their last six OT games, trailed 2-0 at halftime, but two second-half goals put the game into the extra session.
Mack scored her second goal of the game and the season on a direct penalty corner from senior Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J/Eastern Regional) and freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes). It was Michigan's 12th penalty corner of the game.
The Wolverines trailed the Owls 2-0 but started the comeback with a Mack goal on a tip-in from Fobe on a penalty corner at 47:40. The equalizer came eight minutes later when freshman Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) pounced on a rebound off a save to put in her first career goal in a Michigan uniform.
Temple's Bridget Settles scored both goals for the Owls in the first half. She connected on a scramble by the goal in the fifth minute and added a penalty-stroke goal in the 28th minute.
Michigan had a 19-11 shot and 12-7 penalty-corner advantage in the game. Mack led Michigan with nine shots, six of them on goal.
Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) earned the win in goal for the Maize and Blue, stopping one shot in the second half. Fifth-year senior Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) had three saves in the first 35 minutes.
Michigan concludes its weekend road trip this Sunday (Sept. 4) when U-M visits No. 1 Maryland. The game will start at 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md.

Michigan Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On today's win ... "Temple really came out in a very aggressive, fast-paced style. They were playing at home and were very enthusiastic. They got on us right away. They caught us on our heels, but I was very proud of our team for persevering and staying focused. We came back and put up some goals in the second half and won in overtime. That's not easy. We didn't really have our 'A' game today, but to be able to win when you haven't got your best game is a sign of character. I was proud of them for that."
