IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Q: The team has had close to a month to train for this meet. What was accomplished during that stretch of time?
A: It was a lot of hard work. We definitely wanted to work on the details, which I think we did. It was nice to have a weekend where a meet didn't interrupt or interfere with our training. We've been extremely focused, which is always a good thing. I'm excited to see what our team can do with that.
Q: The last time the team was in Iowa was for the Big Ten Championships last season, and it didn't go as planned, finishing eighth. Do you view this meet as a chance for some redemption?
A: I think a little bit, but for the most part, we've moved past that. I think it's more of an opportunity to see what our training differences have been this year. The goal is to swim fast. That's what we want to do every meet, but we also want to see where we can improve.
Q: Talk about the growth that you've seen from the freshman class.
A: They've had amazing growth. I've been really, really impressed and proud. I'm excited to see what they can do with a taper this weekend. They've come a long way since that first weekend. All of them work incredibly hard and seeing the results should be exciting.
Q: Several members of the team have talked about the new dryland and cardio activities. How do they help you once you get into the pool?
A: It gives us an edge. Doing all those things -- the turbo kick, kickboxing, boxing -- it makes it easier to work harder. It also adds an element of intensity that carries over to when we get into the water.
