SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team was named the Midwest Region Rookie of the Year by Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Monday (May 14).
Bektas, the 2012 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, boasts a 32-9 singles record, owning a share of the U-M season wins lead, and has gone 21-5 in dual matches from the No. 1 position. Ranked as high as No. 5 this season in the ITA national poll, Bektas earned a 9-16 seed for the NCAA Singles Championship to guarantee herself ITA All-America honors. She is the fifth Wolverine player in program history to claim the ITA rookie award and the second in as many seasons, joining current sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep).
No. 15-seeded Michigan knocked off Texas A&M, 4-3, last Saturday (May 12) to punch its ticket to the program's third consecutive NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. The Wolverines will take on No. 2-seeded Florida on Thursday (May 17) at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
